All other students participated in the crowning of the Blessed Virgin Mary by carrying the pillow which held the crown, carrying the ribbon streamers on either side of the crown and forming the procession to the shrine where the last student took the crown from the pillow bearer and began the process of passing the flower crown from one student to another until it was placed back on the pillow. The pillow bearer then lifted the crown up to the fortunate boy or girl who had arrived first for that particular Mass. The child, standing on a raised step, stretch up to Mary's head and lovingly placed the flowers like a halo over her blue veil. The children then turned to process to the back of the Church where they found their way to their family. At least two of the students, but in some cases more than two, were assigned to bring the bread and the wine to the altar during the offertory. Having prepared for First Holy Communion, they knew that these elements would be consecrated so that everyone present could receive Jesus. Parishioners lovingly acknowledged the First Communion students and thanked them for coming to honor Mary on behalf of everyone in the parish.
