SAINT COLUMBA PARISH
The Music Ministry of the parish of St. Columba desires to help every person attending a Mass at our parish connect the celebration of the liturgy with his or her own life of faith. We do this by having a music program for each weekend liturgy, by carefully selecting liturgical music that supports the Word for that specific liturgy, and by enlisting the help of competent musicians to lead the congregation in musical prayer.
Who are We?
We are people of faith; regular parishioners of St. Columba parish who have jobs, lead families or attend school and commit one evening a week to rehearsal and to one specific weekend Mass. Some of us are people who have had formal musical training. Some of us have natural talent that we are willing to share and are mentored by other members of the music ministry. We are led by a professional music director who is a certified music teacher. We have a culture of welcoming new members.
St. Columba’s Musical Groups
We have three (3) choirs:
· Children’s Choir – this is a group of children from 3rd grade to 8th grade—a very enthusiastic group of children and we watch them develop over the years with pride. The Children’s Choir is active during the normal school year (no summer activities). They rehearse on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM. They serve at the 9:00 AM liturgy semi-monthly.
· Traditional Choir – this is a group of adults and high school students who focus on traditional liturgical music, usually accompanied by the church’s organ. This group rehearses on Wednesday evenings at 7:30 PM and serves at the 9:00 AM liturgy semi-monthly, alternating with the Children’s Choir. This choir is also inactive during the summer months.
· Contemporary Choir – this is a group of adults and high school students who focus on liturgical music that was written within the past 40 years and reflects a contemporary style. This group includes an assortment of musical instruments such as guitars, flute and keyboard and is open to other instrumental talent as well. This is St. Columba’s largest choir and normally sings in multiple part harmony. The Contemporary Choir rehearses every Thursday evening at 7:30 PM, serves at the 10:30 AM liturgy and is active all year long.
We also combine the talents of all three choirs for some our church’s major celebrations including Christmas and Easter.
At liturgies where we do not have a choir, we have a cantor to lead the congregation in musical prayer. We are always interested in attracting new cantors. Cantors are normally members of one of our choirs.
